Rust Deming ’64 is a retired U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia who spent all 38 years of his career in the foreign service. With an undergraduate degree from Rollins College and a graduate degree from Standford University, Rust entered the foreign service as a political officer in Tunisia. Rust then headed to Japan for much of his service, including his roles as Deputy Chief of Mission to Walter Mondale and as the acting ambassador to Japan from 1997-1998. Rust came full-circle and finished his career with a three-year term as ambassador to Tunisia. Now an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins, Rust sits down with us to discuss his time in the foreign service as well as how interested students could try to follow in his footsteps.
