>> I think if a student is interested in
a career like this, the biggest thing is
to just go out and start doing it.
I started freelance writing as
I was an undergrad at Pomona.
I wrote stories for the Boston
Globe as a freshman in college.
And I think that really just getting out
there, figuring out what you're interested in
and really just going out
and starting to make inroads.
I think that it is a hard path, the path of
journalism and communications and writing
because it is something that is not always
appropriately commentated for in our society,
but I think it's a really valuable
and important role in our world.
I think one of the most important things
is really just having a hard work ethic
and perseverance.
It would say much of my success has been
attributed to basically being out there
and accepting no as an answer
and learning from it.
I spent a lot of time in my early years
as a writer pitching stories to editors
and to alumni magazines and communications
directors and receiving no as an answer
because I didn't have the chops yet.
And so from that you learn.
You talk to other people in the field.
I spent a lot of time networking
with fellow Pomona alums
and learning really how they did what they did.
And then using those skills
and really just working hard
and finding a niche and moving from there.
