>> So my I came to Temple University to study
with Richard Immerman who
is the chair of the program.
I hope he watches this video because
Richard is he's one of the top historians
of foreign relations in the United States so
it's a real honor to be able to work with him.
And generally Temple's University history
program really set itself up as a sort
of a bastion of study for foreign policy,
diplomatic history, and military history.
Over the course of the 1980s, 1990s and
2000s that area of history in many ways sort
of took a back seat to social
history and cultural history,
not to say that there's anything
wrong with those sub-disciplines,
but it really remained Temple
University really remained a place
where national security studies was front and
center, a really important part of the program.
So that's how I got interested
in working with Richard Immerman.
Richard Immerman who knows everybody in the
business was friendly with the office director
at the time his name is Mark Succer
[assumed spelling], he's since moved on.
I applied, I did a good job I guess
at the interview and he made an offer,
he made me an offer and I started a
week after I defended my dissertation.
I was hoping to take a little
time off but I'm not complaining.
Nobody should complain if they get the job that
quickly after defending a dissertation for sure.
