>> When I started in the business I had no clue
that I would spend the next almost 50 years
in the financial services or banking
industry, and as I got more and more in to it,
it was kind of a couple of things.
Good banks today help their clients succeed,
and they do that in a number of ways,
so it's always kind of exciting, at least to me,
to be able to help a client
succeed and do better.
If you will, the sometimes Malign [phonetic
spelling] Capitalist System works pretty good
from my perspective, and we always
like to see people do better.
And that's both, by the way, both
of the employee side of the house,
over the years that's an
interesting aspect because one
of the things that's always been exciting
to me is to be able to help others grow,
and that means folks that I've worked
with, folks that have worked for me,
and to see their growth in the industry as well
and to see them succeed to
higher and higher levels.
In the industry when I started
if you were in the operation side
of the house you were never
supposed to be a CEO, that was--
the only way you got to the CEO
Suite is if you were a lender.
Well, my early years I was not a lender
I was in the operation side of the house,
and thanks to folks like Charlie Rice, again
a former trustee here at Hamilton Holt,
he was one of the guys that helped me succeed
and helped me appreciate the business we are in,
so that's kind of the exciting part of
it is both from seeing the folks you work
with get better, see them improve their skills,
see the growth in them and their success
and the success to them means success to
their families, and all the good things
that happen over a 50-year career.
