>> I went to the University
of Maryland where I majored
in Biology with a minor in German language.
And I only became a photographer because
just for fun on the side I started working
for the student newspaper, the Diamondback.
I think photography is one of those careers
where you don't need to have
a photography major.
I know great, successful
photographers who studied photography
and I know great photographers
who studied physics.
I can probably teach you the
technical stuff in a couple of hours.
I mean it's really just practice
that makes you proficient.
But really, yeah I was just really
concentrating on my craft and then when I felt
like I had a decent portfolio together
I kind of meekly walked into the offices
at the Baltimore Sun and said, Hello
Sir, can I do some freelance work?
I've been reading a book about Native Americans.
I bared my heart.
I got fascinated.
And I just jumped in my car and drove to North
Dakota and ended up spending a month living
around Native American Sioux Reservation.
I got a grant.
I love to travel so I got to do,
I did a full time in Pakistan.
I got a grant that took me to work at
a German magazine for a couple months.
I had a friend in high school
and college who was Pakistani.
He went to go back to Pakistan to go to
medical school and he invited me to come out
and I started meeting and got
fascinated by the country.
Two years later I applied
for a full ride scholarship.
Next thing you know I'm living in
Pakistan for nine months, you know.
