>> My name is Therion Ingridge Baker the
second better known as T.J. I currently serve
as the Dean of Citizenship at City on
a Hill Charter School which is located
in the Massachusetts' area, Boston more so.
So that's what I'm currently doing right now.
The school is an urban based school taking
kids from all over the city educating them
with community and civic backgrounds.
And that's their basis for right now.
It's been around for quite some time and I'm
actually the Dean of their second school.
Basically what you do is you look to see where
there's a need and then you establish a charter.
You present this charter to the state.
Once you're approved, you may be able to open up
an educational institution to educate children.
The school, right now, we just
started off with just 9th grade.
It will grow into all 4 grades and everybody
will matriculate within the next 4 years.
We're actually in the process of
developing our new state of the art building
which will be right downtown Roxbury
which is overlooking pretty
much the whole city of Boston.
I usually start off early morning around 5.
Get up. Get ready.
Get out the door.
Some days of the week I'm
there greeting the kids.
Welcome them.
Make sure they're in uniform.
Make sure they're prepared for class
that day and just putting a smile
on their face and getting them ready to learn.
Any time there's a problem maybe with
discipline, maybe I have to deal with a parent,
speak to a child while they were not in class.
What they were doing, make
rounds throughout the building.
Make sure everything is going well.
You know assisting the faculty and the staff.
Making sure that we have a good culture.
Making sure that everyone is well
behaved and like I said before
in their uniform and ready to learn.
I think the most important thing
is establishing that culture,
is to make sure we have a clean building and
make sure that everybody wants to be there.
