>> So how to get into the career field.
>> I think it's all about making connections
and getting to know people who are already
in the field, people who are already social
workers or counselors, or kind of studying
in that area already, to make contacts and take
advantage of the time that you do see them,
or meet them and it's all about networking.
In order to prepare for social work
I think that you need to really know
that that's what you want to do,
and have some good experience
and just a really good support system in order
for you to vent and be able to have people
that you can kind of lean on and
go to if you're having a hard time.
>> Ok, any classes in particular,
do you recommend?
>> I recommend of course social
work classes and I'm a big advocate
for the social sciences and liberal arts.
I took a few liberal arts classes, I took a
theater class in college, and a art therapy
and those were very beneficial, and
actually help me in my career today.
I think in order to be successful in social
work you need to just work really hard,
and to have a lot of faith in
yourself, a lot of confidence.
You really have to be aware of what
you're doing and why you're doing it,
and know that it's the right thing,
and you have to want to do it to.
I don't think anyone can be a social worker,
and I think that's a big
misconception in our society.
It takes a really unique set of
skills and knowledge in order
to do that, so you really have to want it.
